Even distribution. No technique required.

Most espresso distributors require you to spin and apply consistent pressure — a skill that takes months to master. The Cloud Drop uses gravity. Set it down. Press. Done.

How It Works

The self-leveling base automatically adjusts to the surface of your coffee bed, distributing grounds evenly regardless of how much pressure you apply. Gravity does the calibration.

Features

  • Gravity self-leveling — no spinning technique needed
  • Walnut wood handle — warm grip, café aesthetic
  • Universal fit — compatible with 51, 53, 54, 58mm baskets
  • Stainless steel base — food-safe, easy to clean

Machine Compatibility

The Cloud Drop fits portafilter baskets from:

  • 58mm — Breville Barista Pro/Touch/Dual Boiler, De'Longhi La Specialista, Gaggia Classic Pro, Rancilio Silvia
  • 54mm — Breville Barista Express, Barista Express Impress
  • 53mm — Breville Bambino Plus, Sage Bambino Plus
  • 51mm — Delonghi Dedica, Nespresso Vertuo (portafilter adapters), various compact machines

Where This Fits in Your Puck Prep

  1. Dose your grounds into the portafilter basket.
  2. Place the Cloud Drop on top — it rests on the basket rim.
  3. Press down lightly — the base self-levels and distributes.
  4. Lift straight up. Grounds are now evenly distributed.
  5. Follow with your tamper.

Distributor vs WDT Tool

A gravity distributor like the Cloud Drop levels the surface of your coffee bed. A WDT needle tool breaks up clumps underneath that surface. For grinders with significant clumping, use WDT first, then distribute. For cleaner grinders, the Cloud Drop alone is enough. If you're unsure, start with the distributor — it's the simpler entry point.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a coffee distributor and why do I need one?

A coffee distributor (also called a leveler) evenly spreads ground coffee in the portafilter basket before tamping. Without distribution, grounds can be higher on one side or form density pockets — when you tamp, these become uneven in the puck. Water then flows through the path of least resistance (channeling), producing uneven extraction. A distributor takes 3 seconds and eliminates the most common source of inconsistent espresso.

What's the difference between a gravity distributor and a regular one?

A traditional distributor requires you to apply consistent downward pressure while spinning at a consistent depth and speed — technique that takes practice to master. A gravity distributor has a floating, self-leveling base: when you set it on the portafilter and press, the base finds its own level based on the coffee bed surface. The result is the same regardless of how hard you press or whether you spin. Much more beginner-friendly.

Do I use the distributor before or after tamping?

Always distribute before tamping. The correct workflow is: dose → distribute (or WDT) → tamp. Distribution creates an even, level coffee bed. Tamping then compresses that bed with consistent pressure. If you tamp before distributing, you're locking in any unevenness that was already there.

Cloud Drop vs S-Bottom distributor — which should I choose?

Both are gravity self-leveling distributors. The Cloud Drop has a walnut handle for a warmer aesthetic and is slightly easier to grip. The S-Bottom uses an S-curved base profile that self-adjusts to basket depth variations. Either works well for beginners. If you have a particularly deep or shallow basket, try the S-Bottom. For most standard baskets, either will perform identically.
