Here's a small daily annoyance every home barista knows: you grind into the portafilter, the grounds pile into a little mountain, half of it avalanches over the edge, and now you're brushing coffee off the counter before you've even tamped. A dosing ring fixes this completely — and at $7.99, it's the cheapest workflow upgrade on your espresso bar.
What is a dosing ring?
A dosing ring — also called a dosing funnel — is a short collar that sits on top of your portafilter basket while you grind. It extends the walls of the basket upward, so the mound of grounds has somewhere to go instead of spilling over. When you're done grinding, you lift it off and the grounds drop neatly into the basket.
The magnetic version adds one more convenience: instead of balancing the ring on the basket, the magnet snaps it into place and holds it there. No wobbling, no slipping mid-grind.
Why it matters more than it sounds
Spilled grounds aren't just messy — they're wasted coffee and an inconsistent dose. If grounds fall off the pile before you tamp, your carefully weighed 18g isn't 18g anymore. A dosing ring keeps the full dose in the basket, which means the ratio you dialed in is the ratio you actually brew.
It also helps with distribution: with the ring on, you can WDT or stir the grounds without flinging them everywhere, so you can be more thorough with your prep.
How to use a magnetic dosing ring
- Snap it on. Place the ring on your empty portafilter basket — the magnet holds it in place.
- Grind as usual. Let the grounds pile up inside the ring without worrying about overflow.
- Prep, then lift. Do your WDT or distribution with the ring on, then lift it straight off.
- Tamp. The full, even dose is waiting in the basket.
Which size do you need?
Match the ring to your basket:
- 51mm — DeLonghi Dedica and other compact 51mm machines
- 53/54mm — Breville Barista Express, Barista Pro, Bambino / Bambino Plus
- 58mm — standard prosumer machines (Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, La Marzocco, Lelit, ECM, and similar)
The $7.99 version
Ours is magnetic, anti-static so grounds don't cling to the walls, and comes in black or silver across all three sizes — $7.99 whichever you pick.

Do you still need WDT with a dosing ring?
Yes — they do different jobs. The ring contains the grounds; WDT fixes them. In fact, the ring makes WDT better: with the collar on, you can stir aggressively without flinging grounds across the counter, so you can actually be thorough. The ideal sequence is ring on → grind → WDT with the ring still on → lift the ring → tamp. If you only buy one of the two, pick based on your bigger annoyance: mess (ring) or channeling (WDT). Most home baristas end up with both.
Static: the hidden reason grounds fly everywhere
If your grounds seem to leap out of the basket on their own, that's static — dry environments and certain grinders make it worse. The anti-static funnel shape on this ring helps grounds slide down instead of clinging to the walls, but static starts at the grinder. Two things that help: grinding into the ring rather than an open basket (less exposed surface for grounds to escape from), and letting the grounds rest 20–30 seconds before lifting the ring. If static is severe, a few drops of water on the beans before grinding (the Ross Droplet Technique) tames it at the source.
